Modern society dictates that individuals have choices. Women
no longer have to rely on men for financial support and thus no longer need to
get married. People no longer have to
get married to have a family and so they have children out of wedlock. People
enter into marriage with the thought of, “Well if it doesn’t work we can always
just get a divorce.” Less emphasis on
religion and societal norms means marriage is no longer a must. Whatever
happened to happily ever after?
I’d like to think that no matter if you are religious or
not, you should still want to commit yourself to someone you love so that you
may come together as a unit and build a family in love and strength. This is
the sanctity of marriage. I frown when I hear jokes about marriage and how
terrible it is. Where is the happily ever after that you see in the eyes of two
old people holding hands on a park bench? The institution of marriage has
become very much like a wedding cake in-the-middle of the road. I hope that one
day I can save myself a little slice!
