If I were the boss!

I may not be able to dance better than our president, but I believe I could run some parts of the country better than him!  Don’t get me wrong, he probably is doing his best, but he just hasn’t had the same genius brainwaves as me yet! Yup, I should definitely join the ANC and run in the next elections.
On a more serious note, if I were president of South Africa, my first order of business would be to make it compulsory for the youth to have to do some sort of civil service after school or to go study.  Today’s society is a place built on immorality. Many children come from broken homes as divorce rates continue to sky rocket. There is a lack of control, guidance and stability in households, which leads to a less ambitious, less disciplined youth. Currently the unemployment rate for people under the age of 30 in South Africa is somewhere around 42%. A scary thought! That means that nearly HALF of South Africa’s youth is unemployed. By making them do civil service, the youth and the country would benefit.

School leavers could have a choice to either further their studies or do a year’s civil service in nursing, the army, the police force or nature conservation. This law would help to: increase the percentage of skilled individuals, improve the unemployment rate, boost the economy and not to mention,  solve South Africa’s service delivery problems. The country would have more medical help, which would mean better healthcare. There would be less crime with more police out there and we would never have to worry about going to war as there would always be access to trained soldiers. Nature conservation could help fix global warming problems and rhino poaching.  It would benefit the youth by helping them to develop themselves into well-rounded individuals. They would learn discipline, skills and would have more opportunity to further themselves in life. Good idea?

Next ordered of business – taxis! Need I even say more? We all start to boil at the sight of a taxi getting away with breaking yet another law of the road. If I was the boss, I would put forth a law that would get every taxi to behave. It would state that if a taxi commits more than five serious traffic offenses, their vehicle will be removed  and their licence suspended for five years. Unfair? I don’t think so! They brought it upon themselves with their arrogant attitudes and lack of concern for others on the road.

Another thing I would do if I was in charge of our country would be to abolish the secrecy bill, which sensors anyone from publishing any dirty laundry about the government. This bill goes against everything a democracy stands for. It removes our freedom of speech and right to know the calibre of our leaders. My government would be based on transparency and we would receive our majority vote for the pure fact that we would turn our promises into visible actions.

There are so many things I would do if I were president, but if I write them all down you will be reading all week! If I were the boss, South Africa would be a better place for all!

Two people walk out of a building and into a story

For some the world is a big and scary place. For others it  offers  adventure, self-discovery  and passion! I fall into the latter. There is nothing that excites me more than the prospect of travel.  As of yet I have only been to London, Mozambique  and Thailand and already the travel bug has bitten me hard. Travelling to a completely new and different place with new people and cultures is such an experience. You truly open your eyes and what you see is fascinating. Life suddenly becomes an adventure because you feel this overwhelming need to explore this unknown territory. The tiny little world you live in suddenly becomes huge and full of possibilities.
I do know that travelling has become a privilege and luxury, most people save all year to go overseas on vacation. It is very expensive, which means that a large percentage of you reading this haven’t yet been fortunate enough to have even been out of the country. But aspire to save and travel because I can tell you that you definitely will regret it if you don’t! It is the experience of a life time! Each place is so unique and mind-blowingly different.

The minute you land and walk out of the airport building, it is like walking into a story. I cannot wait for the end of this year because once I have my degree in hand I am shooting off with my partner-in-crime, Alex, on a whirlwind adventure around the world. I don’t know how and what I’ll do overseas, but I can tell you this...I am quite sure that “Two people walk out of a building and into a story” would be a good title for the next chapter in my book of life!
